President Bola Tinubu has approved a N70,000 monthly transport support for public service workers at all levels. It will run for six months from November 2026 to ease the pressure of rising living costs.
The approval was among the resolutions from a conciliation meeting in Abuja on Tuesday between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The government team was led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi.
The talks followed renewed pressure from organised labour over the cost of living, workers' welfare and unfulfilled agreements.
The government also approved payment of peculiar allowance arrears, effective from 1 May 2026. They will be paid in three equal monthly instalments starting in November.
Both sides agreed that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee will be constituted and begin meeting immediately. Its task is to fix an effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.
Tuesday's meeting followed an earlier conciliation session on 22 October 2026, convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment to resolve disagreements between the government and organised labour.
