In a gruesome display of jungle justice, a mob of hundreds stormed a police station, forcibly removed a female suspect, killed her, and set her body ablaze after officers had successfully rescued her from an earlier attack over allegations of child stealing.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued on Sunday, condemning the act as "barbaric, criminal, and a direct assault on the rule of law."
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mandir Hassan, the yet-to-be-identified woman, a native of Maraban Jos, was initially attacked by a mob in the area over suspicions of child theft. Police operatives quickly intervened, moving her to the station for her safety and to allow for a proper investigation.
However, the situation escalated dramatically when a large crowd—numbering in the hundreds—besieged the police facility. In a shocking turn, the mob overpowered officers on duty, broke into the cell, dragged the woman out, lynched her, and proceeded to set her remains on fire.
"This is unacceptable," DSP Hassan stated. "No person or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands. Attacking a police station and killing a suspect in custody is a direct challenge to our justice system."
The Command has confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the murder, with a manhunt currently underway for other fleeing participants. A comprehensive investigation has been launched, and the police have vowed that all those involved will face the full weight of the law.
Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, issued a stern warning to residents, stressing that the Command will not tolerate mob actions, jungle justice, or attacks on police formations and personnel. He urged citizens to report suspicious activities through proper channels rather than resorting to violence.
"We remain committed to protecting lives and property, and upholding justice in accordance with the law," CP Muhammad added. "Let due process take its course."
